GOLOWYN
Camera Capture, Analysis & Publishing
An independent, self-hosted camera observation platform.
UNDER DEVELOPMENT — v0.4.1About the Project
Golowyn is a personal software development project exploring how ordinary IP cameras can be used for more than simply displaying a live video feed.
The intention is to develop a flexible, camera-independent application capable of image capture, video recording, automated observation and analysis. Potential applications include astronomy, wildlife observation, security monitoring and general-purpose webcams.
Golowyn is being designed around local operation, without reliance on cloud services, subscriptions or external accounts. The longer-term aim is to support standalone desktop operation, a browser-based interface and unattended observation systems.
What's in a Name?
Golowyn is a Cornish word meaning "ray of light".
Living in Cornwall, I wanted a name that reflected something of the region, while also having a connection to the purpose of the software.
Whether capturing the night sky, observing wildlife or monitoring a camera feed, the whole process ultimately begins with light reaching a sensor.
So Golowyn seemed rather appropriate: a little ray of Cornish light, finding its way into a computer.
Current Development Status
Prototype v0.4.1 — October 2026
The initial prototype is operational. It has been tested against a real IP camera and currently supports live preview, full-resolution snapshot capture and a shared image acquisition system.
Further development is expected to explore automated event detection, video recording, multiple-camera support, configurable observation profiles and astronomical analysis.
These are development objectives rather than promises of particular features or release dates.
Availability
Golowyn remains experimental software and is not currently available for public download.
The project may eventually be released as free, open-source software, once its core functionality has been developed and sufficiently tested.
Further information will be added as development progresses.
